Before you go
Little Hill is a working sanctuary on a hillside. You’ll be walking on uneven ground that can be soft and muddy this time of year, so come ready to get a little dirty.
What to wear and bring
- Boots or shoes if you don’t mind getting muddy. Please skip sandals and open-toed shoes.
- Long pants and layers. Mornings can be cool and afternoons sunny.
- A hat and sunscreen. Most of the tour is outdoors, rain or shine.
- Your camera. The goats will happily pose, and they may also try to taste your jacket.
Sanctuary rules
- No pets, please, not even in the car.Visiting animals stress our residents and can carry illnesses they can’t fight off. If you need to bring a service animal, contact us before booking.
- Wash your boots when you arrive.Use the boot-wash station at check-in. If you’ve been on another farm or around birds in the past week, let us know. Bird flu is active in California this fall, and our chickens and turkeys are counting on you.
- Leave the feeding to us.Only feed an animal if a guide invites you to, and keep food out of your pockets.
- Stay with your guide.Walk, don’t run, and follow your guide’s lead at gates and pens.
- Keep it vegan. We ask that any food you bring be plant-based out of respect for the animals. No smoking, vaping, or alcohol, please.

Ten years on the little hill
“Animals are here in this world with us and not for us.”
Camilla and Helbard Alkhassadeh founded Little Hill Sanctuary in 2016. Today more than 100 rescued farmed animals live here, survivors of abuse, neglect, and slaughter. Here at the sanctuary no animal is ever sold or bred.
In 2023, floods left the sanctuary under several feet of water and destroyed most of what we had built. This community showed up, and now we’re working toward a new, safer farm for the next ten years.
Little Hill also hosts Santa Cruz VegFest every year, grows a veganic garden and food forest to support our community, and works with locals in Tanzania with our African Street Dog Rescue initiative.

How can I help if I can’t come?
